Fantastic Letter F

“F” week had us hopping like frogs, frolicking with fairies, and listening and dancing to musical instruments that begin with the letter “f.”

We read My Friend Chicken by Adam McCauley and each made a fine feathered friend out of air-dry clay with feathers. Lois Ehlert’s book, Leaf Man, inspired outdoor ephemeral leaf characters with nature bits to create expressions. Where did the leaf characters venture off to in the wind?

Our nature faces in clay took shape with the addition of acorns, stones, leaves, sticks, and more. Bark fairy doors embellished with pixie dust, gems, and tiny door knobs welcomed fairies from near and far to some very surprising places.

We read All the Families by Margaret Wise Brown and learned to sign the words for our family members in American Sign Language. So far we have learned the signs for mother, father, sister, and brother.

We read Fuera de Aqui, Horrible Monstruo Verde (Go Away Big Green Monster) by Ed Emberley. We used the story to practice the parts of the face in Spanish.

In music we listened to the sounds made by the French horn, flute, and fiddle, and danced to folk music, funk, and Fandango! Ask your child what the word “forte” means.

The frog kit offered opportunities for drawing, counting, adding, subtracting, and patterning as well as learning the life cycle of a frog. The song “Five Green and Speckled Frogs” had us all subtracting!

During yoga we focused on our feet and learned a new pose: frog. We also reviewed and practiced our other alphabet yoga poses.

The letter “G” is ushering in our new theme of Gratitude and Giving.
